They already have Aoi, and a guy who specializes in kicking people's shins+leg wrestling wouldn't be too interesting.

Well Aoi's style is not based in HKD but in Sokaku Takeda's Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu which is the father art of both Yong-sul Choi's Hapkido and Morihei Ueshiba's Aikido.

Eh. At that point, it's down to splitting hairs when it comes down to building a new character around a similar style.

Feel free to pick a topic, there are a few to choose from; Good KMA's to toss into VF, the popularity of the Korean chracters in Tekken, or which arts look too similar to each other... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

hrmm... if you go back far enough in korean history. there was a grappling art called "yoo sool." around the time taekkyun/hwarangdo became popularized by the hwarang, yoo sool disappeared from the korean peninsula and popped up in japan. the korean characters in tekken suck. tae kwon do sucks cause its basically a rip off of karate.

i couldn't choose one so i chose all three topics. I swear to god, if i get a fucking four page reply from shadowdean, i will kill myself.

I think now is the time for Sega to add a tae kwon do fighter to the VF series. I kind of felt this series really needs Korean martial arts, such as hap ki do, Tang su do, and taek kyon. If AM-2 is going to add one, either in VF5:R or in future installments, I hope they can use Jacky's Lightning Storm 5 since VF4:EVO change the technique into Lightning Combination 5.

I always wondered if the perception of Koreans had an influence in their decision to ignore TKD or Korean Characters.

Zainichi are Korerans living in Japan and are basciclly 2nd class citizens. They are forced to change their surname and pretend to be Japanese so they can get the same oppurtunities. Its pretty sad. Otherwise, they get bullied througout shcool, can't enter elite universtities, aren't even considered for promotion, etc.

VF doesn't attract casual gamers, but mostly hardcore gamers willing invest the time and learn the huge learning curve. Koreans are also notorious for being nationalistic. As mentioned before, they could have tapped into a huge market.

    Korean Gamers

    Land of Video Games

Of course, this is all speculation and ranting but I still think AM2 didn't make the best decision.

Isn't Taekkyun just an old leg wrestling contest popular as an old festival game? IIRC, HRD (not the same as the fighting youths, more of a HKD offshoot)popped up after TKD.

That's one great reason for not putting Korean fighters into it...their sense of nationalism is downright childish, idiotic, and annoying. If AM2 put a korean fighter with a Korean style into it, it wouldn't be a fighter with a Korean stle - it'll be the Korean fighter. And if he's not S+++ tier, the Koreans will turn it into a "our character isn't top tier because Japs hate us (and invaded us and burnt down our cities and raped our women and stolen our culture and...etc ect)" argument...so it's a lose-lose situation for Sega.

I think TKD as a style is unique enough to warrent an entry into VF, but the best thing to do is to just modify Sarah into a full TKD fighter. That way, being blonde and female, the Koreans won't be able to make it into a nationalism argument.

Taekkyun is more of striking though it's techchniques appear dancelike. You probably mistaken it for ssireum.

Nah, I'd mistake Ssireum for Sumo, not Puring.

I somewhat agree with your opinion on their nationalism, but if it encourages more people to play, its better for the series.

BTW-I hope you have nothing against Koreans.

A low tier character is better than no character. More recognition to the franchise. Again more players and stronger competition.

I don't think any of the chinese characters were top tier, but I never heard any chinese players complianing about the rape of nanking.

It wouldn't meet their standard and expectation of TKD especially after you factor in their "childish, idiotic, and annoying" nationalism. If you could you national chauvinism to bring popularity to the series, then why not? Namco didn't mind.

At one point, during the VF 2 era, VF was the king of fighting games. Then Namco introduces some korean characters in their fighting game, then it becomes the fighting game of choice.

In a country where gaming is recognized as a sport. Do you actually think that more people play Tekken more than VF because its a better game?

Nationalism goes a long way in Korea.

No way Sarah players would like having their character falling down if their kicks are blocked at close range. That'd suck.
    ----

FL is cool enough, her kicks are numerous; I don't see any reason for Sega ever adding in a TKD fighter.

Why not a guy who only uses head-butts and palms (let's call him Smashy)?

    Smashy (the movelist):

Well, if you can get more people, no matter what nationality to play VF, then that's always great.

Just making a point that while Korean nationalism is great for Korea as a country, it's annoying the hell out of everyone else. So I do agree it's bad for business and bad for the game(like you said, less popularity/competition), but maybe Sega just doesn't want to deal with the consequences of adding a Korean character, because Korean nationalism annoys them too. That's all. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

And if we're going to have Head-Butt, TKD both as styles in VF...then we'll need Tap-Dancing too.
