Yes, there are many assholes in Japan, although most people just hold it in more there, from what I've seen. But if you had shown him how American you could be (ie. beating his face in), most likely the people around you would run away scared. But police might come, and that would suck. It's better that you restrained yourself.

It's funny though, being WHITE in Japan, as opposed to being even a little darker colored in Japan, how different of an impression you give because of general opinion.

Japan is far from a perfect place. But they make damn good videogames.
