This doesn't bode very well for the next version of VF. Sega messed up pretty royally on this one.

These are some disappointing numbers, yes. I'd say that competition is the chief factor. For multiplayer fans, Halo, Orange Box and Call of Duty 4 are very solid reasons not to bother with a primarily online game. For single player fans, Bioshock, Orange Box, Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect are good reasons not to play a game whose achievement points require an RPG level of dedication.

Seriously, this was a really bad time for it to be released. If it came out a month earlier like it was suppose to, there would be a lot more sales. If this game gets voted into WGS, then I bet the sales will go up as well.

Are you serious? Wow, way to keep up the maturity level kid.

if Amazon.com is any kind of indicator, VF5 never broke the top 100
    during the release week.

I think it eventually did after temporarily dropping to $39.99

Sega should consider making the next version as a downloadable game.

I have seen the TV ad a couple of times almost everyday since the 29th of October which was about 2 days from the release stateside.

    Stations:

    G4 (video games/ humor)
    Spike (wrestling block)
    Cartoon Network/ Adult Swim
    Sci-Fi Channel (wrestling block)

I was very surprised when I saw the VF5:Online TV spots in G4 and Spike. But in terms of creating a fan base nothing can compensate for the lack of a well-established arcade scene in the US. I went to Manhattan on vacation and I couldn't find ONE single VF5 arcade. It's like trying to explain why football (soccer) has the same popularity as chess and is played mainly by women in the US.

I just remembered something else. There were a lot of commercial spots for VF5 for the XBox 360 in the weeks before its release. I don't see any ads for it now, but it did get pretty good exposure as far as TV is concerned. I saw about as many ads for VF5 as I saw for Halo 3 or CoD 4.

PS3 VF5 is near the 200k mark now. (US) The 50k number might be higher as it's very close the VG charts number.

Can we please wait for the holiday season to end? Then you can write this game off as failure. Right now way to much competition for a game traditionally not a big seller anyway.

Exactly, I can't even count all the big titles that are getting released at the same time right now.

Yeah.. Virtua Fighter has never been overly popular in the US as far as I know.. Only a handful of my gaming friends ever played it.. on PS2. Its a very 'hardcore' game. and a very niche market in the US. Not to mention it came out right around a number of other HUGE games.. Halo3.. Only reason i bought it was cause Halo 3 was my ONLY 360 game and it had online play. It'll sell slow and steady.. My only other friend who played VF4.. doesn't have a 360 yet. Also.. once its out in japan im sure it'll be a pretty big seller.. Even though their pretty much a playstation club over there..

This style of game isn't broadly appealing in the US thats all. I'm sure sega already knew that..

It will probably sell even less in Japan because of the arcade comp.

Eh i dunnno i'd rather own a game for live than have to go to the arcade for it.. assuming the game play is the same..

Well - what if the arcade is a block away and has pro-level players to learn from?

really, cuz i'm still seeing a couple ads a week, and i don't watch that much television, and FF thru the comercials when i do . . . yet i'm still noticing htem. in fact, they're hugely responsible for me buying an ELITE this week. well, the commercials and this damn site /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
