There are 4th and 5th Dans with losing records. My record is close to .500, and I hover between 4th-5th Dan.

I've been stuck at 5th dan because people at my ranking are never on when I'm on so I can rank up gah!

Yeah I lost my promotion to 3rd Dan match and haven't seen it since. I know it's because I break even gainst players close in rank. I like being 60 matches over .500 but I think I will have to start sacrificing that and filtering out newbies in custom matches if I really care about upping my rank.

I just wondered if it looked kind of silly to still be at 2nd Dan close to 400 matches under my belt.

I genearly assume when I see a lower ranked dan player with a ton of xp points that they've been horing noobs and need to fight people closer to their rank. That or they truly are that rank..

I'm still in the Kyu ranks.

But to be fair, I play far more private games than I do ranked matches.

I think I truly am this rank. For now at least. I don't troll for newbies as I always create the match. I don't like playing from 2P.

I always look for games, I haven't created one yet... so I'm always 2P... its weird now for me if I get shifted to the other side during the battle /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I got to 1st or 2nd Dan pretty quickly... I started out about 10-50 and now I think I'm 60-70... or something like that. Moving along, but I'm definetelly not selecting my opponents, I'm just hitting search and if I find someone I play. But IMO, on-line rank is not important, if I was 10-100000 I could care less, I just like playing someoen with a pulse. Its been SOOOOOOOOOOO long (VF2) since I've played real people in a VF game, its freaking AWESOME!!

I just recently got the game and I haven't played online yet. Is it a whole new ranking thing online then it is from quest?

From what I'm reading so far, the ranking system seems to be the same as the quest mode and that of arcades in Japan too.

Generally, your promotion bar will increase when you play against opponents whose ranks are either 2 above or 2 below you.

When playing against ranks above/below you, the promotion bar increases/decreases much lesser than when you play against a same rank player. It also do not have an 'accumulative win/loss' effect.

Eg: A 6th dan's fastest way of promotion is to beat five times 6-dan players and winning them all. He can also beat ten 4/5/7/8 dans players and 'fill' up the promotion bar to be promoted.

In another senario, he could be losing to so many 4/5/7/8 dans and his promotion bar is nearly empty but he starts to beat five 6th dans without losing a single match, he will be promoted despite his promotion bar is only 40% filled.

The reverse is also true when he beats nine x 4/5/7/8 dans but went on a losing streak against five of his own rank, he would be demoted with his fifth match a demotion ranking match. The promotion bar in this case will be like 40% filled but red.

For 1st Dan case, your promotion bar will only increase if you play 1st dans to 2nd dans but not 2nd kyu or 1st kyu.

From my experience in Japan(not 100% sure of ranks below 5th dan),

1st dan to 2nd dan, you need to beat 2 of your rank and 4 of +/- 2 ranks to be promoted.

3rd dan you need 3 of your rank and 6 of +/- 2 ranks to be promoted.

4rd dan you need 4 of your rank and 8 of +/- 2 ranks.

5th to 10dan you need 5 of your rank and 10 of +/- 2 ranks.

Demotion is consistent for 1st to 10th dans being, five losses against your same ranks and ten losses against someone +/- 2 ranks.

10th dan can also 'steal' a Kaiden(Master) rank by beating a Kaiden in a single match. I'm pretty sure most are aware of this and how to rank up pass Kaiden.

For ranks past Kaiden, I don't really know exactly how it works as I only got to 3 ranks above 10th dan.

Cool thanks. I got to warrior rank today in quest (offline) mode. So if i play online I am going to be warrior rank or do I start all over from 10th kyu? I don't want to play other warrior ranks yet, because I don't think I am of warrior rank level.

Toasty you start over at 10th Kyu.

Also, back to my post... I finally made 3rd Dan and close to 80 games over.500. That is of course until I got my ass handed to me by like 5 higher ranking players who took 9 straight from me. I am about to lose my rank. I called it once I went back down to 70 over. Oh well it was fun being there even if it was a brief status.

If you feel you need to improve...

    1)Set a goal.
2)Formulate a plan to achieve the goal.
    3)Execute the plan.
    4)Evaluate your performance.

At this point in time it is pointless to ask others whether 220-160 & 2nd dan is "bad" or not since 1)they aren't you & 2) you probably didn't start at 0-0 10th kyu with a goal and a plan.

Each day, each match, each round apply the formula above and see if you don't achieve* it all.

    *works outside of VF too.

Can you flesh that out a little. I wan't to master Akira and my goal is to win. My performance is so so cause I stay around 50% w/l but when I make a plan or "look" for moves I feel like I lose even more than just flowing through the match.

Well, if you really care about w/l... then go to player matches when you're trying to "learn" how to play. That said, I spend a lot of time in ranked matches just playing around with moves I don't know well, trying to get reversal timing right against characters I don't get to play against often (Aoi). You can't really expect to win doing that, but once you've learned those moves/techniques and can apply them in serious games, you'll find yourself a better player.

That said... it is a video game... I would never take the time to formally set goals/write plans... I do this for fun, if I'm gonna go to that kind of trouble, I'd learn something that applies to my real job.
