Shou, I am confident I can get a 5-man team made up of Singapore and Hong Kong players. I have three confirmed (danny13, Summah, and myself) from Singapore and one (Brian) from Hong Kong. I also have several probables, so making 5 should be no problem.

Please communicate this to Kyasao and the BT team! Getting excited about this!!

Hey all, as luck would have it, Beat Tribe is the weekend BEFORE my spring break. Lucky me eh? Plus it's pry too late for me to sign up for a team anyway. But, as it stands now, I'll be travelling to Tokyo that weekend to meet up with everyone. I might be able to take Friday off since I have half days on Friday, but I don't think I can take that Monday off without pissing some teachers off, cause taking time off to travel for a video game tournament (right before spring break) isn't a good way to win favors. /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif

But yea, as it stands now I'll defintely make the long ass trip into Tokyo that weekend.

    QUESTION

We arrive to Japan. Gaijin of the sort. We come to beat tribe arcade. How does Yamagishi know we're officially invited US team. Does he mail us a formal invitiation? names on a list? how does that work? I dont want to end up going to japan just to be rejected at the door.

This is exactly what I was thinking?

I'm sure there must a time limit for entrants. I don't see why someone who speaks English in the Japanese VF community (These people do exist) can't post here with details of how to register, where to register, when you have to register by, tournament starting time, venue address, etc, etc, etc. I'm sure they would get many more entrants like that. Then again I guess they don't want this do they. A load of gaijin piling into their event.

This thread is called Call to US players but apart from Shou's posts I see nothing of the sort.

If anyone has any information about the tournament that are holding cos they think we all know could they please share with us as we don't know jack diddly dee.

    Thank you

I look forward to meeting you all in Tokyo.

Uhh, when the initial post has changed that much after quite some time, shouldn't you post something new versus editing??

So, only ONE U.S. team does not need to qualify. Does this mean that a Singapore/HK team would need to go through qualifiers? Do we even have a team?

    These are critical!

Did you read the whole post before replying? Did you purposely miss the part where I wrote I would look into the situation for Team Singapore? /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Why are you asking me if you have a team? Didn't you already form a team? I am just relaying what the Japanese folk tell me. It's not like I'm getting paid for this. We could have kept this secret and just had a handful of people go. /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Anyway, just assume all international teams will have to play qualifiers then. Normally, Japanese players have to obtain points to get a bye for qualifiers and letting foreign players get a bye is of course controversial. Yamagishi will not promise anything on that issue.

OK, the rebuke is fair--it all could have been one great secret (though I knew about this quite some time ago), and so we are grateful for whatever tidbits and communication that you can pass onto us.

However, please understand that people need to make commitments in terms of budget, flights, reservations, and days off from work in order to make this happen. I approached people based on the initial December post (must agree by end of December, 5 teams, automatic qualification). I look like an asshole now that the sales pitch has changed. It's highly unlikely any of the international teams will be able to qualify on their own merit...if people knew they were going to lose their qualifiers and simply watch others for the rest of the event, would they be as enthusiastic about spending all that money?

For me, the answer is yes, but the answer may be no for others. That's why it's imperative to communicate this clearly so people understand what they're getting into.

Aight, that's pretty much what I'm worried about...thanks again for all your help in acting as the liaison in all of this.

As for team Singapore/Hong Kong thus far:

    Definite:
chibi_bryan: 73% Lion (Tsuwamono, Hong Kong)
    Danny13: 82% Akira (Singapore)
    ice-9: 82% Kage (Singapore)
Summah: No card, likely Jacky (Singapore)

    Possible:
Captain: 82% Akira (One above Tsuwamono, Hong Kong)
Xiao Anzi: 69% 10-dan Lei Fei (Hong Kong)
    Other Hong Kong players

I don't know how we compare with the U.S. teams, but this Singapore/Hong Kong team will be some of the best that Asia ex-Japan, ex-Korea has to offer.

    I agree with Ice 9
    .....................

I need specifics of what is going to happen. Socal team is waiting to purchase airfare, accommodations, and passports based on what’s going to happen with this tournament. We do plan to visit other sites while we are there, but the tournament is the main reason we are even considering going. I appreciate all the work you are doing, but when I’m about to spend 1500 I need to know this will be worth it. Thx in advance

Ok reading your post, it still doesnt answer some of my questions. I might sound like someone whos demanding a lot now, but I really need to put the pressure on. We really need FINALIZED information before the end of the coming week (such as location, tournament costs if any, team arrangements, how we do decide who gets qualified if there is only one team etc etc.). Im not willing to invest $1000 early, for something that might not happen months down the line. Im pretty sure that speaks for the rest of us too. Even though you're not getting paid for this, after weeks of no real information, I think you owe it to the players that are going for some confirmation that this event will actually happen and that there is openings for international players other than korea. After speaking with some fellow players, doubts are starting to arise.

ps. can you please update with a new post, everytime you update the first

Re: Beat Tribe Cup March 2004 (Call to US Players)

    Hey Everyone,

last night, during my phone call w/ Yamagishi regarding videos, this subject was eventually brought up by him. Now, while I can't say definately how it's going to be played out, I can give my impressions of his attitude about it. Realize that there is still some communication gap between us, but I can generally understand about 85% of what he's saying. Also, I was a little drunk last night /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif, so if any of this ends up being incorrect in the long run, please don't say I misled anyone, I'm just gonna give my impressions of the conversation. I'm basically trying to ease tensions here:

For anyone that hasn't ever met him, Yamagishi is a very relaxed, friendly guy; who puts more hard work into supporting the VF scene than almost all the people on this board spend playing the game. So, with a big event like this, if people are going to come from other countries to play, he's going to try to accomodate you. If people come that aren't allowed to play, or have to qualify upon arrival, I feel that it would mainly be a measure made so as not to upset all the Japanese teams that had to go through many touraments and qualifiers to get to the BT Cup; not because Yamagishi himself, or the people that invited others to come, didn't want you to play.

Yamagishi seems aware that a lot of people are gonna come, and that at least one US team has been given the "buy" into the tourney. Last night, I got the impression that 2 US teams would probably be okay in the end. I have no idea if this means these teams will have to qualify etc., but he seemed to like the idea (which Shou mentioned before) that some of the Japanese players there would help decide the make-up of the teams. He also seems aware that other teams, like Jeffs team from Singapore/Hong Kong will probably show up.

If you have to qualify, I wouldn't get upset about it. The Japanese teams will be very strong, so even if you get into the final itself (because this tourney is a sort of "final"), you might loose your first match anyway. If I were going, I'd probably mentally prepare myself to just enjoy being at the event and watching/having fun, with a focus on playing being an added bonus. I think maybe that's the healthiest attitude at this point. People tend to get a little miffed at last-minuite changes of the rules at tourneys, so I wouldn't be suprised to see some local teams protesting that too many people are being let in without having to go through the process that they all did. But, like I said, I think they're going to try to make room for everyone, Yamagishi seems pretty relaxed, if a little confused about exactly who will be coming/what their teams will be.

He told me that there will be a total of between 190-200 Japanese teams, and as of yet, the event location (including the area of Tokyo where it will be held) is still undecided.

So, if I were going, I'd go realizing that there's a slight chance I might not get to play (due to things like protesting of local teams etc), and if I do get to play, I'll probably have to qualify. BTW I'd say that this is much more true if you aren't from NYC/one of the people promised a spot by Kyasao. But, that's just my impression. If you go, please don't level any anger about not getting to play at Yamagishi, as I think he's gonna do everything he can to let everyone play. Remember that this is a community event, and in the end, it'll probably be up to all the local players at the event to decide how it plays out.

    I hope this helps

    Bryan
