What's the deal with clinches?

New to VF, not sure what the correct term is. You know those throws some characters have where they hold onto you and can choose which throw to go into? I haven't run into any myself yet, but I've been watching tournaments and curiously wondering what both the attacker and the defender can do during this situation.

Can you break out of the clinch? Can you guess their followup and tech it like any other throw?

Just tech it. 1 guess out of 3.

Only in Vanilla a tech would cause damage since it’s was an attack to some characters as a tech animation.

So, you can potentially tech the initial clinch and if not that then guess tech one of the follow-ups?

You can’t tech the clinch in Fs/Us. In Vanilla you could.

Ooh, I see. So if you ever get caught in a clinch the best you can do is guess the followup. Thanks for the info.

It depends on the clinch. Taka and Gohs for example are just throws that knockdown or give frame advantage enough for free hits. Wolf has a follow up to his clinch that transitions him into another version of his clinch with its own follow ups. Clinches are just like throws where the forward option does the most damage, too, so it's good to tech forward until they show you they do more than just forward.

So - when is the appropriate time to try to press P+G and a direction to attempt to escape? Do you get two tries, or do you do it just when they clinch you or just when they throw you out of the clinch?

You could hold the P+G input pre-emptively to buffer a throw escape. Or press within the throw escape buffer window which is roughly 10-11 frames before throw connects and roughly 10-11 frames after throw connects.

Only one try, so 33% chance to guess correctly.
