Well they got it, but the setup is kind of crap. Its not even near the rest of the fighting games and the screen and sound is crap. Contoll setup is ok but some of the moves were hard to pull off because of the stiff controller. The good news is i get to play it and its only 50cents...1player is best out of 3 and 2player is best out of five I'll be there tomoorw at around 7pm

    Hi all,

Joey, Joey's friend (a Tawainese Lei Fei player), and I will be at SHGL tomorrow (Wednesday) night at around 7 PM. Sorry we couldn't make it today. We're also planning on going Saturday. Hope to see some people tomorrow!

Nice to have actually played evo after reading about it all this time.

    Good points not already mentioned:

The VF4 evo cabinet is large, two people fit quite comfortably. Button layout is good. The machine is not next to SC2 or all the Capcom games, you don't have to sit in a crowd. The arcade has stools available. Several games are turned up loud (DDR, GF7), but the overall volume in the arcade is not deafening. The machine appears to be Japanese (don't know how to tell what version it is - test 1, test 2, or first release). Token Tuesday is a good deal (70 tokens for $10.00 - the game is only 2 to play or continue).

Not so good points in detail:

I think the monitor is misadjusted. Contrast is too high, brightness is too low (e.g., when you use Vanessa, you can see her hair - that's about it). I don't know if these things are easily adjusted. I think the volume is way too low. The sticks are OK, but people found it difficult to do dodge attacks consistently. Up and down motions on the sticks don't register all that well (they're the baseball-bat style sticks, so it's also possible that I'm not holding them correctly).

Screen and volume adjustments would go a long way in making this a great machine. If anyone knows someone at SHGL that would actually go after this, please ask them to do so. I'm not in there often enough to know who to speak with.

All points considered, I'm still happy to make the 90 mile round trip to play it.

Thanks to Brisal73 for discovering it was there.

I ran into Andy and Joey at SHGL today. I wonder why they were there? /versus/images/icons/smile.gif Looks like other people (other than the main socali crew) are interested in VF4Evo. There were a few guys watching the whole time I was there plus one person who briefly talked to andy. I think he was asking about movelists and such.

Probably the most unusual and interesting thing is that one arcade employee (perhaps manager) was talking to some guy about Evo and he was well versed in the workings of VF.net. I think he'd used it in Japan before... or he was just bullshitting. Either way, he knew what VF.net was and that the US don't have it. I shoulda asked him to adjust the colors/contrast on the monitor. I wish the buttons were closer together though.

Anyway, after playing somewhat seriously against people in Evo, I now see how Akira has gotten less effective than in ver C. Goh and Brad seem to be hard for me to figure out. It'll take some time to get used to them.

I'll probably try to make the trip to Golfland on Saturday. I gotta get as much practice as I can while Mike's out of town. hehehe

Saturday sounds pretty good. I talked to Catherine about it - she said "I don't see any reason why not."

What time were you thinking of making it out there?

Just got a call from Brisal73. He wants to see about meeting Friday night (tomorrow, that is) at SHGL. I know this works better for Spotlite. Catherine and I are fine with either night (we'll probably find a way to go both nights if attendance is going to split fairly evenly). Mike92123 is competing at NYG3, so he's not around. It would be cool to hear from Andy, Eric, Joey, Gribbly, Harlock, SoL_fizZ, and vf4Akira about all this.

If you're actually in the Bay Area right now, you'd need to take 580 east to 5 south and go a few hundred miles until you reach the 22 in Southern California. Take the 22 west (toward Long Beach) to Beach Blvd. and go north two or three blocks. Southern Hills Golfland is on the left.

I thought Bryan would be working Friday night (and Saturday night), but I could be wrong. Anyhow, Joey, David, Bryan, and I were actually planning on playing Saturday during the day, maybe around noon or so. Nothing has been confirmed yet -- I'll try to get the time tomorrow afternoon.

I really don't know if Bryan can make it tonight. I based that comment on what I know of his usual schedule. Not very responsible on my part. Sorry for the confusion that caused.

Brisal73 may actually be available tomorrow afternoon as I believe he's working Saturday night. I'd better confirm it, though.

Noon tomorrow does work well for Catherine and I.

    Hey guys,

glad you've had the chance to play Evo, can't wait to get to SHGL to play. Actually, although I told Andy I might be able to play tomorrow (sat), my girlfriend has an art show opening tomorrow night, and I'm not sure what's happening for me in the day.

You guys should probably just play, and if I can make it for a couple hours, I will. All in all though, don't think I'll really be able to play until maybe wednesday or thursday, probably wednesday.

    Bryan

Let's go ahead and make it noon on Saturday. I agree that somebody should ask to get the brightness/contrast adjusted, and to turn the volume up.

    Noon sounds good.

I just called SHGL and asked about the brightness/contrast and volume settings. Phone person informed me that it's a low-res monitor and the brightness is turned up as far as it will go without bleeding. He stated that they're doing the best they can with what they've got. I have difficultly believing it can't be made to look better, but I'm not a monitor expert. I figure I'll ask someone again while I'm there tomorrow.

They did say they'll turn the volume up.

I'll try to make it around noon on Sat. Expect more like 2 or 3pm though. /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif

Very cool afternoon, I must say. Catherine, Spotlite, Andy, Joey, and I played some great games.

Had someone work with the monitor settings (I actually had the chance to make the adjustments myself), but there wasn't much that could be done (I was expecting some magical transformation - you could cut back the contrast, but you couldn't make it brighter, - cutting back on contrast made it darker, bah). Vanessa's features still disappear in dark levels, and Goh is blue. They did turn the volume up, which was nice.

Spotlite said the machine was the same version he played in Japan (all the moves are there, etc.)

    Looking forward to next time.

Well, sorry I missed everyone. I did manage to get there right before Joey and Andy left around 6pm. At least I got to play for a couple hours by myself. Got to experiment a lot which was nice to do.

I did notice the volume was turned up, but it was still hard to make out the voices and music.
