L.A. Akira VF5 R arcade matches

Hey guys,

I arrived in tokyo a few days ago and have been playing some R here and there. Although I have alot of catching up to do since most everyone here has been playing the game since july, i'm trying my best and enjoying the process of getting the new moves and situations into muscle memory.

This is a match from my first day of playing. Don't expect too much since i'm not used to shuns new stuff yet.

Here are some observations I made about shun in R so far.

1. K is no longer 14 frames but more like 16 or so.

This sucks becuase kkp and (16dp) kk2pk was a pretty solid guaranteed attack after blocking Akiras double palm or Jeffs knee. Now shun can do 6p,p which is a 2 hit 14 frame mid. Not quite the same and not nearly as powerful but hey, at least its a real elbow!

2. K+g side turned situations arent nearly as strong as in vf5.

Side guard is now a factor and shun's 3k has turned into his Hold 6, k from vf5 which doesnt seem to work as well (or maybe at all) for getting side staggers in this situation. Another nerf after K+G side turned after CH is the loss of OM P. If an opponent tried to 2p or tap g then eteg to get out of trouble here, omp used to beat both of those options and condition him to block so you could set up more throws. The one really nice thing is that now in R, the CH sound for K+G is distinctly different from normal hit and alot easier than just looking for the change in animation.

3. 6ppp strings are gone and replaced with 6p,p elbow class move. The new 6p,p is great, no doubt, but the 6ppp strings shun had from 3 to 5 were useful for forcing delayed string guessing games on your opponent. 46ppp is still available but since the second hit of that one isnt a mid, it's easier for the opponent to 2p under it.

4. SOU BT sabaki can no longer be hit checked but is also no longer -15 and probably nitaku.

Good and bad imo.

5. No chouwan without 6 drinks and no chouwan ryouken without 8 really hurts.

6. Oushin lying down stance is greatly improved but just like the choukarou stance after K+G in vf5, can not be hit checked.

If your attack is blocked and you go into oushin, you seem to be at enough of a disadvantage before you can do anything. For example, shun does 9p and then goes into oushin but the 9p is blocked. Jeff immediately does 2k+g and pounce is guaranteed even before you can roll away. Just like in the first video I posted, the akira player would attack me between strings to stop my BS. Counters vs oushin works the same way.

7. Shuns 64p (full circular high) is gone outside of choukarou stance. He now has 214p which is a full circular mid that knocks down but can only be done with 10dp and it costs 2p every time you use it whether you hit or not.

I am not going to watch your moves. I don't envy you to play VF, but I strongly envy you to be in japan and you saw the last year out, you know? I am curious not only about your VF, but also the things which you spend time without VF. I know this is VFDC, but you can write something like"I went to a Ramen restaurant with Itazan and ate this(a picture)" or something like that haha.

Ask him that YOSUKE told you that the Ramen restaurant called "Nakamoto" is so good that you have to try! he will take you there!

well then, in any case, have a good time in Japan. I am pretty certain you will~~ take care~~ there should be so crowded in any place of Tokyo for these days.

at 1:46 you can see what happens when you go into lying down stance after a blocked move. Some characters can get a quarter life off you if they catch you doing it.

This was a match I saved during the open battle at shibuya last night. I saved this video because the shun player I played against had a pretty funny item. Young face, fishermans beard and baseball cap.

oh, and can someone explain what those green ranked bars stand for? not the Kyu n Dan ones, but the one that appears under the player's picture.
Most ppl have a green one, i know Highkick has a purple and chibita has a white one

Hey man. I think there is some sort of game you can play over vf.net with cell phones over here and thats what those green, purple and white tags are.

Also, I hung out with srider from vfdc and sin# last night in shinjuku. We went to get korean bbq and then played vf5r in a small arcade for 50 yen a game (WOOOOOOOT). When there is as big as skill gap as me compared to sin#, you really appreciate the 50 yen games. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif



Srider and I had a couple of matches but I messed up and didnt really save the best one. Next time we meet up I am gonna save a match vs sin# so you guys can see the pwning.
