The best thing for you could be to learn how the VF system works. Here's a link to it. The answers you're lookng for are centered around understanding advantage and disadvantage - basically knowing when to block, when to throw, and when to attack. You don't even need specifics at this time. Don't worry about Pai's mid kick, don't even worry so much that it's a mid kick, even. You're being attacked - that's the most important thing. What do you do next? Understanding the system will give the answer.
